MICT Expands to Meet Rising Trade Demand

18 FEB 2025

Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) Investments continue to further Advance Service Delivery

The Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) is scaling up its capacity and efficiency in response to surging trade volumes, driven by the demand for faster and more sustainable cargo handling.

International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) is making significant investments in new infrastructure, automation, and green technology to accommodate the growing volume of shipments and streamline operations at MICT. To handle larger cargo loads, MICT is constructing Berth 8, designed for ultra-large vessels with capacities of up to 18,000 TEUs. This addition will increase the terminal's capacity by 200,000 TEUs, bringing the annual throughput to 3.5 million TEUs.

To improve container flow and reduce congestion, additional yard space is being developed. Efficiency upgrades include the installation of fourteen automated gate lanes and six optical character recognition (OCR) portals, which have reduced truck dwell time to an average of 47.82 minutes. A new yard management system optimizes container stacking, while additional trailers and tractors enhance cargo movement.

Sustainability remains a key focus, with the deployment of eight zero-emission rubber-tired gantries (RTGs), complementing a fleet that is now 83 percent hybrid. Plans are underway to integrate electric trucks and establish electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, aligning with ICTSI’s goal to reduce emissions per container move by 26 percent and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Digitalization initiatives include the ICTSI app, which offers real-time tracking, e-wallet payments for faster transactions, and SMS notifications for container holds and releases. Additionally, free Wi-Fi access has been introduced for truck drivers.

With trade volumes expected to continue growing, MICT’s expansion ensures it can meet increasing demand while enhancing efficiency and sustainability. As the country’s busiest port, MICT ranks among the most efficient globally, driven by ongoing investments in infrastructure, technology, and sustainability.
